What about women?
An analysis of a comedy club lineup over four years found that:
- Women represented 20% of MCs
- Middle-of-the-night female comics represented 14% of lineups
- 8% of headliners were women
We created Funny “Ladies” Power Hour to help empower women in comedy. “Why,” do you ask? Because women are often overlooked, undervalued, and disrespected in this space. Here are just a few experiences from comedians.
–A talent agency that books comedians reached out to me about performing for a private event. Turns out that the client requested a female comedian, and the agency didn’t have one comedian who was a woman to refer. Not a single one.
–A show producer once told me, “If you’d suck d!c&, you’d get more stage time.”
-So many times, MCs comment on a woman’s looks when introducing her to the audience. As a comedian, I spend a lot of time working on my material and my art. I just wish that we could be viewed as comedians instead of something to look at.
